Changing fuel filters Lister / Perkins STW3

I have a new filter for the secondary filter.
1. Unscrew,
2.take out old.
3. Replace with new.

Bleed system

..? Is there a filter up top in the primary filter?

So there are probably two bolts on top of the filter. One which holds the unit together and the other a bleed. Undo this and then pump the fuel pump lever arrowed in yellow to bleed the fuel filter. Yours has what looks like a fuel return line and banjo attached, but it will do.

Not sure but I think he was asking if there was a filtre on top of the water separator that he refers to as the primary filter. The answer of course would be yes asd it would be a Delphi with the part number on the side.

Of course he could have been asking how to bleed the system but ......

I am sure that he is aware that he will likely have to crack a couple of injectors to get the air out. Never had much luck with these Perks starting without doing that after a filtre change.

Having read it again, yes you could be right, he is asking about the filter.

Yes there is!
And it will be the same filter part number as your engine mounted one (the one you called secondary).

Yes! The clear bowl is a water separator and screws onto the above part that is a filter (red and black). When you change this filter, before you tighten the filter, open the fuel valve to fill the filter with fuel, then tighten and move to the secondary filter. Then the secondary is on the motor (blue). To bleed use the lever and keep pumping and loosen the bolt on top of the secondary filter until the fuel comes out and bubbles slow down. Then crack an injector, keep on using the lever. If no fuel comes out of the injector, turn the engine over at the same time that you have an injector line cracked open. When air comes out, this will be visible big time. Close the line and move to another injector until the engine starts.... good learning experience... good luck...

I have a 4108 Perkins generator with a similar secondary. If you don't leave the filter open too long, I get away with bleeding just the secondary filter housing. I have an inline electric pump I only use when changing filters and it makes bleeding easy.

Re: Changing fuel filters Lister / Perkins STW3

When the engine is new the primary filter is not a filter at all it is just a empty housing as it is mend to be a water separator only at least on all my new generators that i have sold in the past 15 years I have seen it many times that people replace it with a filter not knowing that the primary is empty. what would be the use of having two the same filters after each other? If they had different micron size filtering capability's then it would make sense.
