CHARGING SYSTEM FOR OUTBOARD.

l have discovered that the charging kit for my Suzuki DF6A outboard engine for charging a battery is very expensive here in South Africa from the agents.

Apart from buying this unit from Suzuki what other options are there i.e. DIY comparisons of their unit or other practical solutions to charge my battery ?

Re: CHARGING SYSTEM FOR OUTBOARD.

Is this a battery for an electric-start model?

I'd look at motorcycle rectifier/regulators. Compare specs, look for potted which a motorcycle one is likely to be anyway.

Re: CHARGING SYSTEM FOR OUTBOARD.

You could just get a small solar panel and controller to keep a battery or batteries charged.

A PWM controller goes for around $16 and a 50 watt solar panel $65. That's on amazon your pricing my vary.

I have a pull start outboard also with no alternator so my 220 ah batteries are kept charged with solar and they power everything on my boat: autopilot, inverter, HDTV, VHF/GPS/AIS, lights, fans, depth, and charge my laptops and phone.

+1 for solar.
It will charge your batteries all the time while the sun is shining and when the OB isn't running (hopefully sailing).
