Convert Leece Neville Prestolite Alternator to External Regulator?

Hi, looking for a little tech-support here.

I came across this great how-to article on doing a conversion to an external regular on a LN Alternator:

Leece-Neville 8MR Series Alternator External Regulation Conversion Photo Gallery by Compass Marine How To at pbase.com

Unfortunately it looks like mine is a little different, it has a terminal for 'Reg' which I assume is field, and it has one for ignition-exciter.

My assumption is that I don't need the conversion kit at all, and can just disconnect the internal regulator from the terminals and connect my external (P-type) regulator field to the 'Reg' and other terminals.

Can anyone correct me on that?

Or has anyone converted one of these alternators to external regulation who can offer any pointers?

Thx!

I did it to 8LHA alternators, wiring looks similar. You don't need a kit but you need to end up with one of the spade connectors with green green wires connected to ground and the other connected to the field output of your regulator.

The conversion kit doesn't fit my alternator...

I guess I could just take the attached regulator off and connect to the field (which I believe is the left of the green connectors behind the regulator cover) guess it would just leave those things a little exposed.

I'm really not sure.

Sorry.
To answer my own question for posterity - and Doug you're right, that kit just provides terminals for field and ground.

In my confusion I didn't think think the kit would work because I'd lose the terminal for Exciter. I now realise - with a night's sleep to cure me of my stupidity - that this terminal is unnecessary as all I need is to run my ignition exciter to the Field terminal.
