Coolant Leak

Hi all,

I recently purchased a boat with a Volvo Penta 2002. A boatyard serviced the engine when I was getting some other work done (bottom paint, new exhaust, engine mounts). However I have noticed coolant and some oil in the pan (see photo). Could this be a loose hose or something more serious? The boat is a 1989 and the engine hours are unknown.

Thanks for the help.

It could be a loose hose or something more serious.

It could just be that there is no expansion bottle fitted to the overflow cap.

Dig in and have a look.

Agree w/Sailmonkey, need to get in there and look around. Grab some paper towels, clean eng. bilge area and bottom of eng. pan to see if there are any indicators what area of the motor is leaking (fwd/rear). After running the motor a bit ,w/new towels wipe around fittings in the suspected area to help find the leaker.

Do you have a coolant recovery tank? Not difficult to add if you don't and nice to observe coolant levels with one. Would also purchase a new pressure cap (ck psi for your motor) since that is a possible leak source. Easy/inexpensive to change.

Re: Coolant Leak

You didn't say if the oil and coolant appeared after running the engine or if you just noticed it after the boatyard changed these fluids. The coolant looks pretty new, like it just came out the jug. Maybe a little was spilled when it was changed and not mopped up?
