Crank drive raw water pump conversion..?

Just wondering if anyone has ever done a crankshaft driven water pump">raw water pump conversion on a diesel auxiliary (Westerbeke W58).
Advantages vs disadvantages - reliability....
Goal- to improve access to impeller, reduce belt dust issue, along with misalignment of pulleys.
Having a v-drive I do have the extra room
