Cylinder Hone Perkins 4108

Greetings
I have a bad piston on my Perkins 4.108, the cylinders are good, no scratches or damage, still at spec size when measured with a bore dial indicator. I have a new piston on order but will need to do a quick hone to allow the new rings to seat properly.
Does anyone have info on what grit ball hone I should use?
I'm deciding between 240 and 320 grit, since the cylinders are within standard spec for bore and they just need a light hone (about 8 passes) to allow the new rings to seat properly.
Anyone have that info?

If it is truly smooth and you are just breaking the glaze, 320 to give a light cross hatch pattern is sufficient. You don't want to remove any more material than necessary.

Re: Cylinder Hone Perkins 4108

I'm about to hone the 3 cylinders in my Westerbeke W21A. I'll be using a BRM Flex Hone at 240 grit. Flex Hone's website has a lot of information about honing cylinders and 240 was what they recommended for cast iron cylinders and normal rings. 320 and up was reserved for chrome and other coating on rings. Just my .02.

Re: Cylinder Hone Perkins 4108

Update: I used the BRM Flex Hone today and was really impressed with the results. These pistons had been frozen in the bores for many years and although the cross hatch pattern looked great, I could still see (and feel) the spots where the rings had been stuck. I ordered a cheap Amazon stone hone today in an attempt to remove the highs without also lowering the lows which the "berry" hone does. I'll post the results.

If you have the engine apart, why not just put in new sleeves?

My Westerbeke W21A does not have replaceable sleeves. They sell sleeves for this engine but the block has to be bored to use them.

Re: Cylinder Hone Perkins 4108

Do you have any ridge at the top of the cylinder? If so, you'll need a ridge reamer. A hone will not remove it.

Re: Cylinder Hone Perkins 4108

Thought I'd post a couple of pics of some of my honing results. I used a flex hone slightly larger than my cylinder bore and Mystery Oil in a squeeze bottle to keep it lubricated. These cylinders had already been sanded with up to 1500 grit paper but with the pistons still in the bores. Quick, easy job. We'll see if it runs.
