D2-55 Heat Exchanger Replacement

I'm replacing my Volvo Penta D2-55B heat exchanger with current replacement part #22898286 which is for the "F" model.

I have all the bolts, hoses, wiring, etc. off but cannot separate the heat exchanger from the engine block. I've used a small flat prybar without success. This engine has studs on the upper corners so the heat exchanger must first go to the side before it can come off. This heat exchanger has been on for 20 years. Any experience out there or good ideas?

Thanks.

Yeah, those studs can be a challenge, I’ve had to force the heat exchanger away from the head with very thin wedges and when I got a bit of a gap, used a hacksaw blade to cut the studs off in the gap and drilled out the bit in the head later. Use progressively thicker wedges, if you get lucky it might seperate enough to get a hold of the the stud in the gap with those “birds beak” vice grips.

Re: D2-55 Heat Exchanger Replacement

UPDATE:
I removed the studs by putting on double nuts and backing the studs out. Of the two studs, one with a flat background was easy while the other sat in a concave indent in the heat exchanger and was more difficult because it was hard to get a grip on the nut. After their removal the heat exchanger came off relatively easy.
