That's been my experience as well, all along the US Gulf Coast.

And I've witnessed many owners going below with the hose, as I've worked the dock in a couple of marinas. Never been an issue that I've seen.

That must be new for this coming boating season (on a tangent now) I've never been asked to step of my boat for refueling purposes. I always let the attendant do the fueling but never have to get off the boat. My dinghy requires the tank to be put on the dock but that's it. Boating in Lake Ontario for 30 years

Isn’t there an issue where some jurisdictions dye taxed diesel red and others dye UNtaxed diesel red? I think it’s a problem between the UK and EU? Don’t even think of having a handgun in NJ waters. You WILL go to jail. Sooner or later, with all these stupid laws and regulations will kill cruising because your boat will have be customized to the jurisdiction you float in.

No one will object if you put taxed fuel in your boat but, put the non-taxed in your car, you will end up in court and fined, if caught.

I hate laws and regulations, I'd love to just dump chemical waste in the street and shoot anyone that didn't like it.

Gets more complicated in the EU. My understanding (and this is hearsay) it that red diesel (untaxed) is not allowed even in boats (in certain countries), so what do you do were you legally fill up with red diesel and then sail into their country? My understanding is that particular country makes no exceptions for foreign boats!

My grandfather died of a heart attack. So he must have been immune to cancer and kidney disease.

I don't believe that's an immunity issue, more one of timing. Was he marinated in diesel fuel at any point in his life?

That has been a contentious issue between UK and the rest of Europe for decades.

So if a large commercial ship comes into port, they send someone else out to check the color of the fuel in their tanks? I sort of doubt that.

What a silly misplaced response. I never said regulations were not required, but silly regulations, especially ones that contradict are not helpful to anyone.

Re: Diesel tank fill below deck?

Some ports I've fuelled up in where there isn't a posh marina you have a grubby old diesel hose that usually supplies the fishing vessels. I wouldn't fancy trying to take any of those hoses down below on a boat, even if they could reach...

Diesel fumes are explosive around 0.5% air mixture, while gasoline requires around 1.5%. The flash point is the temperature at which vapors will ignite in the presence of an ignition source, open flame, etc. Gasoline has a flash point that is well below room temperature while diesel is much higher typically around 125-200F. However, some formulations, like 1-D, and additives can lower the flash point to as low as 95F.

If anything warms diesel vapors above its flash point, i.e. a hot engine room, above ground storage tanks, etc, then it can be every bit as dangerous as gas.
