I was wrong, although it had been mentioned upthread, I failed to remember you have the Balmar external regulator. The MC-612 typically gets it power source via the ignition lead and your tach could be driven by the the tach wire from the MC-612.

The dicky ignition contact in the key switch could account for all the observed faults.

Kudos to Mrs. captsue for noticing the sweet and not so sweet spots in the key switch. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh pair of eyes or in this case, a more delicate touch.

If you do not already use one, consider the brightest headlamp you can buy for trouble shooting where there is little contrast. It has made a big difference for Jim.

diesels require cranking power from the battery, the battery may be turning the diesel but not hard enough to start, check the battery voltage
