Are you recommending this engine as a replacement for a 4200cc 4 cylinder diesel engine producing 85hp?

How big is that engine you are recommending?

If I was you, I would call American Diesel. They are the go to guys for the Lehmans. Bomac Marine are the worst IMO, and I own and just rebuilt my SP135 Lehman. Lehmans are a low RPM bullet proof dependable engine. Very economical on fuel too. Call Brian before making your decision. HOME | American Diesel Corp

Re: Drop-in Replacement for Ford Lehman

UPDATE

With far more effort than it should have required, I found the original mechanic who diagnosed the problem.

The 1981 engine, with only 1200 hours on it, threw a rod, which damaged the piston, rod, and crankshaft. The block is fine, but the head may need some rework.

A complete internal rebuild kit for all internal parts, including crankshaft, rods, valve train, pistons, sleeves, and gaskets is $3700 retail via US and UK tractor suppliers.

I have still had ZERO luck in getting any shops or mechanics in Nova Scotia that have been recommended on this forum and elsewhere to return calls or emails about rebuilding this engine (and these are not small one man shops, but well established large companies that are not returning my calls or responding to emails.) Later this month, I will be making some personal visits to shops as was suggested.

If I cannot find anyone, I will do the job myself. I cannot bring myself to spend $17k for a new engine - they just are not worth that much. No other replacement suggestions have been reasonably priced either.

I also cannot get any dealers in NS to return my calls about a repower? Odd!

That is a great offer. I know that following 1981, the mfg of the boat switched from the Ford Lehman to the Perkins. It could work well. I will get some measurements.

What kind of Transmission does it have?

Nothing yet. I will never be willing to spend as much as they want for a new replacement engine, and I still believe the few companies that advertise rebuilt Lehmans want far too much.

Somewhere out there will be a deal I am willing to live with.

As for the Perkins offer, it would require extensive modifications that I am not willing to make.

Re: Drop-in Replacement for Ford Lehman

Whitby 42 s and Brewer 12.8 s came with the Lehman originally both those made in Canada and in the USA. I had a Brewer 12.8 that was repowered with a Yanmar 4JH3-te a 75 HP model that fit smoothly and aligned with the stock Yanmar mounts smoothly. Plus the Yanmar comes with transmission . Seems like you want a non existent cheap deal .LOL These Lehmans were also put in hundreds of Trawlers and are in demand.

Re: Drop-in Replacement for Ford Lehman

I feel your pain. I'm looking to repower & boy is it expensive.

I found this on Ebay which might be of help. Interesting that the seller is offering multiple configurations.

I have found plenty of cheap deals, well below what I am willing to spend. The problem is that the sellers are generally inflexible. One wanted cash only, but was in a remote location 2000 miles away. Others are not willing to allow me to send a shipping company to pick it up at my expense.

Or as above, too much modification is required.
