Engine just stopped , can't restart

So we were cruising along at 3000 RPM doing 20 knots, and the engine just stopped. Restarted but couldn't put into gear. changed the fuel filter, then it just wouldn't restart. Volvo Penta, but that is all I know ( not my boat) It is fuel injected. So other than fuel pump or throttle cable, any other things to look at ? Earlier this year the starter motor and alternator were changed. We were about 1 and 1/2 hours into the trip when this happened, got towed to nearest marina.

Do you mean the engine would stall when you loaded it?

Sounds like a line wrapped around the prop. If the engine runs fine in neutral, but dies when you put it into gear, or the trans won’t let you put it into gear, there is probably something keeping the prop from spinning.

Possible though doesn’t explain the lack of restart. Unless they didn’t bleed the air out when they changed the fuel filter.

If the engine stops suddenly with no bang, it's usually air in the system or the stop solenoid. It is almost never the filter unless the boat if obviously lacking maintenance.
When you change the filter, for something to do, air is induced into the fuel line and has to be purged and the engine bled. So you end up with a new problem and a tougher diagnosis.

The stop solenoid stops fuel to the injector pump when the key is turned off.

Diesels don't usually just stop when they run out of fuel. Usually they run ragged or even run lean for a few seconds.
Air is usually the problem if the stop solenoid is working. It can enter from the filter seal or a bad connection, usually before the lift pump since after the pump the fuel is pressurized.
The stop solenoid is often in the top of the injector pump. To check the stop solenoid, verify you have power to it when the key is on. If you don't have power, it still could be a bad wire connection from the ignition key. On some injector pumps, you can hear the solenoid come on the the key is turned on. And on some engines the stop solenoid is external, just before the injector pump.
One other possibility is too much water in the fuel tank. Usually the engine will run ragged, but if it getting solid water, the engine can just stop. If that happens, you want to drain the water out of the tank, fuel lines, pumps and injector lines. Put on new filters and start pumping new fuel. Bleed the system, and start the engine to force the moisture out of the cylinders before you have rust problems.

He did not specify that this was a diesel engine. Seems likely to me that it was a petrol engine, and that often brings in a different set of issues.

nothing around the prop.
First time restarted, it died when put in gear
Second time restarted it died before got in gear

yes, petrol engine, was filled up before the trip, trip was 1 and 1/2 hours before it just stopped. no bang, just slowed down, no engine running

I didn't know that Volvo made gas (petrol) marine engines. Hopefully this wasn't a diesel that was mistaken for a gas engine and had gas put in the tank vs diesel fuel.
