Engine Mounts Perkins 4.108

Guys,
My mechanic said two out of four need to be replaced. It is Mexico.. so I take such advises with grain of salt.
See attached pictures... One "good" another one "bad"
The engine vibrates when cold after warming up (completely) the vibration goes away.
What you guys think? Or just my mechanic wants to sell me his mounts (he has 2 used bud "good"
TAD gave me quote $70 each for D103 ... One year ago was around $40

Sent price quote request to Bushing Inc - no price yet/
Any word of wisdom?
Thank you

OK. Watch the engine while someone else runs it through its tasks. Start, warmup, rev, put in gear, rev a bit. Does the engine rock on its mounts? Does it shift, such that it endangers your shaft alignment? The mounts should absorb some vibration, but all the thrust comes through them, so shifting about suggests that it's time to replace them.

Re: Engine Mounts Perkins 4.108

When I shift the gear it shakes - I don't have anything to compare but nothing tremendous. When engine close to 1K RPM - almost no vibration - steady running. Per previous owner the new transmission back 150 hr and of cource shaft was aligned.
I will buy the mounts anyway.. Mine are at least 20 years old. Here is reference may be someone to find useful

Trans Atlantic Diesel sells ($70 each mount) buying mounts from Bushing Inc.
Bushing Inc sells to official business only (any kind). Price for DF-2207-2 $45
plus shipment ($20 to AZ). No tax.
They suggested to contact Lewis Marine Supply in FL for possible better price(nope.. $56 each) or go2marine.com $52 each

I'd change all four. You can check for movement yourself by taping a marker to the engine or trans and put a piece of paper to it. Or us e a big a** screw driver as a pry bar and physically check the mounts but at that age and vibrations as described I'd consider them used and replace all of them.

Re: Engine Mounts Perkins 4.108

If they are the original mounts in the boat the are past due for replacement. You do not say how old the boat is or how old the mounts are. Based on that it is a 4-108 I am guessing the boat is at least 30 years old.

I just replaced the engine mounts at eighteen years on my Beta 50, about the same size engine. I was advised that they should be replaced at 10 years. Due to tight access the fourth mount was a nightmare to get out and replace. YMMV.

PS. When I had a 4-108 in this same boat I replaced the mounts at 15 years and they needed them.

The in use and replacement pictures aren't a good match for height.
Try to buy new ones with the same dimensions or face a bigger effort in shaft alignment.

Re: Engine Mounts Perkins 4.108

Cheap does not translate to good sometimes with mounts. Nor does ones that the seller claims are "better". I bought some supposedly great urethane mounts a while back from a reputable supplier. I should have known better. They completely sucked and changing mounts on that boat was a major PIA requiring more than the usual boat yoga. Way too stiff. Live/learn.

You need a mount designed for the weight of the drive train. Too stiff and it'll vibrate your fillings out. Too soft and you get vibrations and shaft not sealing well. Some motors will spec a different front and rear mount, same way some cars have left and right ones. Get OE spec mounts if you can.

Having said that the Parts4engines one look good.

Re: Engine Mounts Perkins 4.108

You need engine mounts that match the existing bolt holes where they are bolted to the engine bed. You do not want to be drilling new engine bed bolt holes - to do that the engine would have to be removed for access.

Next, the engine brackets need to be low on the height adjuster screws. If the brackets are too high on the screws there will be more flexing of the engine that effects alignment when the engine thrust is applied to the mounts. Use spacers between the mounts and the bed to reduce the height.

I went through all this replacing my 4-108 with the Beta 50. I used aluminum plate to make spacers under the engine mounts. I also had to drill new holes for the different sized mounts. Not a big deal with the engine out.

One disappointment when I replaced my Ford Osco mounts, was I went according to weight recommendations. Should have bought one size larger.

Re: Engine Mounts Perkins 4.108

Some thing wrong with old mounts in pictures one well down on pedestal bolt one well up on pedestal bolt ,this alone will cause vibration ,maybe the beds are not square or parallel to the shaft ,new mounts will not solve this problem ,dissconect shaft etc lower engine to bottom of mounts ,then raise engine equally on all mounts ,may need new shims ,and or mounts ,bo it once bo it wright .⛵️⚓️
