What troubles me is the running out of control issue, the way it's not idling.
I shall by trying the bypassing the lift pump etc as it's been worrying me all along, especially as the lift pump is so hard to get to.
Let me clarify. When the engine is running, all injectors are getting fuel. When the engine suddenly stops, and then you go for start again, THEN when you have the injector lines cracked open you should get fuel almost immediately. If it takes a while to get fuel there, then obviously something isn't right.

Check those decompression controls. Maybe when you give the engine compression, you could wire the levers in the run position. Don't have the engine in front of me so unsure, but check and make sure that all return springs, linkages, etc are all doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Too bad you don't have manifold pressure gauges.

Because it starts just fine, obviously you did an acceptable job of lapping and adjusting your valves. BUT, is the one that gave you problems, still sticking sometimes?

It rather sounds like you have governor issues, to me, and the governor should be integral to your injector pump. Once you prove that the engine will not keep running even when you gravity feed fuel DIRECTLY to the injection pump, and nothing metric is going on with your decompression levers or the formerly misbehaving push rod, then you have once and for all narrowed down the reason why your engine still doesn't run.

I downloaded the manual for the one cylinder version of your engine, and it should all be the same. I will have a look and maybe I will have some ideas when I have internet again.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Thanks Growley, Definitely have a good idea where I'm heading with all this now.
I have removed the morse cable at the moment and have a set of pipe clamps on there to change the regulator for more control over it. We'll see how that goes.
I only get a few tries before I flatten the batteries. Charge up again on the solar panel each day.

Oh and there is fuel immediately at the injectors.

I opened the top cover to check the valves but all still seems to be moving just fine, though another check wouldn't go amiss!

Oh I thought you only had hand start capability.

There are manuals, and there are manuals. The one I downloaded from I remember not where, is called

Work shop Manual
for
BUKH diesel engine
TYPE DV10/20
009W2228

306 pages. Quite a bit of detail on the governors and injector pumps used on the DV-10 and DV-20 engines. If this isn't the manual that you have, you should get this one. This is not an owner's manual. This is the shop manual.

This Workshop manual appears to be direct from BUKH & covers both DV10 & DV 20. It is an excellent manual-nice detail. Only complaint I have, using it online, the index refers to lettered sections but not page numbers. Inconvenient-but workable. https://bukh.dk/upload_dir/docs/FAQ/...%2020%20ME.pdf

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

After verifying good fuel flow from gravity tank-engine starts and runs well.

IMHO-the next suspect is Fuel Timing
Page M7/ pg 160
Is it sludged or stuck?

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Unfortunately my version doesn't have page numbers, but sections M 9 etc...
I'll have a closer look at the manual later today.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. You just said that it runs great when you feed the injector pump directly by gravity. The problem seems to me to be located somewhere upstream from there. Try feeding fuel directly to the lift pump from your temporary gravity tank, and see what happens. If then the engine runs, you know that the problem is further upstream, and if it does not run properly, then you know that the problem is between the inlet of the lift pump and the inlet of the injector pump, If that is the case, isolate again. Feed directly to the filter, bypassing lift pump.

But back to what if feeding the lift pump by gravity causes the engine to run good, if you replaced all your hoses and got all connections tight, could be the pickup tube or strainer, could be the vent is blocked. Could be chips or flakes of rust or other debris getting sucked up to the pickup tube strainer. All of those things can be addressed once you narrow it down to the faulty component.

Sorry Growley. He had not tried gravity feed at this point.

My post should have read "If gravity feed doesn't cure the no start(and assuming gravity feed is supplying lots of fuel to inlet of inj. pump, and assuming inj pump is outputting HP fuel to INJ. nozzles and inj nozzles are spraying a proper pattern)

Then,I would check the injection timing mechanism for cleanliness & smooth operation. Then,I would go thru the inje. timing proceedure.

I've not tried gravity feed yet. Will try this afternoon.
Will also look at the injection timing mechanism.

It ran some in yesterdays video.
It is not running at all in these 2 vids. above.
I hear a slight diesel knock,which indicates one cyl,at least,is firing occasionally.
In top vid. with rocker valve cover on & decompress levers ??in decompress position??,engine rolls fairly easily,as if it is decompressed.
The lower vid -cranking speed sounds the same-but decompressors have been removed with valve cover?-so engine is being cranked under full compression?
Which way do the levers point for decompress?

Still acts like no fuel to cylinders.
Try gravity feed first.

The fuel timing mechanism appears difficult to get to & a bit technical to adjust. Leave it til we eliminate easier possibilities.

Earlier the engine was getting fuel for a short while, now the engine is not getting fuel at all - simple as that.
It's late here so maybe more tomorrow if no else gets it sorted in the meantime.
