Re: Engine wiring question....what is this?

Looks like some kind of fusible link to me...if everything works OK, insulate it and otherwise don't fool with it.

That "condenser" is a capacitor and is placed between the conductor you are trying to remove interference from and ground. A capacitor will pass AC but not DC so acting as a filter, it shorts the interference to ground. This is not a sophisticated filter but it is all that's needed in many cases. I don't think what we have here is a filter, if it's supposed to be one it's not well done.

I agree, the whole thing is a mystery and we're not getting any more information from the OP.

Nothing on my Yanmar harness matches the standard. No solid yellow at all, anywhere. Other standard colors mentioned not the same either.

The shielded wire is curious, but likely chosen for the color (Out of the scrap wire box). The shield isn't grounded.

Not connected "between" to wires. Merely tapped off a convenient switched 12v wire.

Which contact on the alt does the wire go to? Charge lamp? Field?

The only wire on the contact?

A "condenser" is commonly found in points distributors and on the back of many factory alternators, for noise suppression. As are resistor spark plugs. Many may recall a neighbor's lawn mower making noise in their car radio, no resistor plug or bad "open" condenser on the points.

However noise filters come in many configurations. Using diodes, resistors, inductors, transistors, etc. A band pass filter for example.

OP may have given up on us. And I don't have the answer. My curiosity waining.

The other end of the purple wire goes back to the instrument panel/gauges.

Here is the purple wire connection to the alternator

Re: Engine wiring question....what is this?

mrybas, sorry I have no time to post more right now. I'm working on three boats and trying to get them wrapped up.

This post will bump the thread back up, maybe someone can help.

four winds, be careful with that "w" word, boats are too much fun to be insulted that way!

Re: Engine wiring question....what is this?

It is a resistor and diode to simulate the function, and bypass the use, of a charge indicator light.

If you run straight 12v to the alternator, it will back feed the ignition circuit upon shutdown and keep the ignition circuit live. Generally the engine will keep on running when you turn the key off.

You could replace that set up with a regular socket and 12v incandescent light bulb, then you would have a charge indicator light at each engine instead of at the dashboard or just leave it alone.

Note: An, old style, car side marker light socket (2 wire) and a 194 (amber) bulb works perfect. Easy to carry a few spare bulbs since they are small.
