Exhaust hose reducer

I have to replace the exhaust elbow on our generator. The elbow that comes with the generator has a stainless reducer welded to the elbow that comes from the engine manufacturer but the only elbows available are the stock ones for the engine.

The exhaust hose is 40mm and the new elbow is 45mm. I can’t find anyone in the islands that wants to weld a reducer to the elbow and frankly, that was the failure point of this one. .

Switching the entire exhaust to 45mm isn’t feasible so I’m looking to figure out my best option for getting from a 45mm outlet to a 40mm hose.

The two options I am considering are to either have a reducer fabricated out of stainless or fiberglass. There is 45mm hose available.

Any reason to go one over the other?

Re: Exhaust hose reducer

Two things l note ,the injection point for the cooling water is a long way down from the top weld there will be verry little cooling above the injection point ,as for joining the too ,a piece of 40 mm of s/s seamless tube into the 45 mm piece build hip the smaller dia pipe with heat proof tape and cover the join with a piece of 45 mm hose plus clamps.

Re: Exhaust hose reducer

Can you insert a short length of 45mm over the outside of 40mm hose?

My concern would be that I wouldn’t be able to get a hose clamp on to seal that connection.

That would be a terrible, terrible idea for anything other than an emergency repair. How much exhaust gas and water would that genset pump inside the boat before you noticed it???

Just no. Do not kludge this.

Re: Exhaust hose reducer

What about a piece of 45mm hose on the elbow and then this adapter to connect to the 40mm hose?

Perfect!
Suggest use T-clamps if available.

Re: Exhaust hose reducer

I ordered this. I’m not sure if aluminum is going to be an issue with the exhaust gases and sea water but I’ll give it a shot. Click image for larger version
