exhaust leak

For the 4th time in 20 years I have to replace the dry exhaust pipe fvrpm the manifold on my 4-108 to the stand pipe muffler.. As before, ther part that failed is flexible extension that accommodates the slight bend that the pipe makes.

The stand pipe, and tail pieces are all 316 SS and have held up well. The part the corrodes is the flexible coupler.

Has anyone come up with a solution that might last longer than 5 years. The bend required is less than 20' If I extended the pipes as long as possible and minimized the length of the flex-pipe, would that help?

Re: exhaust leak

My 1969 Columbia 36 had a flex pipe about 18" long. Don't know the exact construction but it was braided SS wire on the outside with threaded bushings on each end. This boat had an old style exhaust system, a double walled bronze pipe all the way to the stern, water in the outer chamber and exhaust gas in the inner. Water didn't enter the exhaust stream until just before the overboard outlet. It appeared to be original, and was still leak free when I sold the boat in 2020. I've seen similar flex pipes in auto supply stores but with different ends.

exhaust leak

There are myriad automotive options available in 316s/s and not too expensive, I got about a thousand good possibilities with a google search. To avoid causing engine mis alignment the less rigid bellows are better and it might be better to use longer rather than try for shorter bellows[ATTACH]262688
