Exhaust Thermo Switch Control 877773

Hi,
i have investigated the possibility to add an exhaust temperature warning on my D2-55C and have found the above VP part.

I wonder if this can be wired directly to the MDI box's AUX contact and then send a "AUX" warning on the tachometer when the temerature is too high.

Does anyone know if this is possible or if one does need the AUX relay kit as well?

You can see the set here: http://useddieselenginecenter.com/vo...nta-set-877773

And it is also described in this VP catalogue on page 41:

Best regards
Christian

Why not install an exhaust gas temperature meter, same work better information

You are right, but in a small classic boat dashboard gauge space is limited and i was wondering wether I also can save a lot of wiring when I can connect it directly to the AUX input on the D2 within the engine compartment.

What is your main concern, overloading the engine or lack of cooling water?

To get a warning when lack of cooling water e.g. missed to open seacock og clogged intake during sailing. It is a D2-55 used in a motorboat - so sinle engine is the only propulsion.

Then why not a raw water flow alarm, uses no light or gauge just a piezo buzzer. Can be installed very easily

That will work with your D2-55, although it is a bit pricey and requires a penetration of the exhaust hose/pipe. I have a D2-75. I just found a thermostat temp switch that was normally open and closed the contacts at 250 degrees. I hooked it to the Aux Terminal and Ground. I ziptied it to the outside of the exhaust hose ( it is a flat contact sensor). When the contacts close, it activates the Aux alarm. They are available from Mouser Electronics for about $20
If you leave the seacock closed or if you lose an impeller, the exhaust hose heats up quite rapidly, while the water temp is very slow to come up.

Also, you do not need the Aux Relay kit for either installation.

The raw water flow sensor is well under $100 and gives you an instantaneous signal if the flow is interrupted. This sensor is mounted before the raw water pump and will protect the entire cooling system. Once the exhaust hose heats up other elements in the system could be toast.

I have mine installed in conjunction with the oil pressure idiot light. Both sensors are normally open - so either failure sounds the same horn.

I don't care much which in the first few seconds - either loss of cooling or low oil is an immediate problem, get some place safe and shut down. Easy to tell once you open the engine.

I tried a $3 remote reading thermometer on the exhaust elbow of my Genset. Just a quick test. It was there for 8 years before it died of old age. It was a wonderful addition. Even tiny changes in water flow showed up as changes in temperature of the elbow. A dirty raw water strainer? Temps up about 10 degrees. A broken impeller blade? About 20 degrees. You could even see the difference caused by the changed sea water temperatures. If you’re handy making mounting boxes, thermometers are available on eBay for under $5. <www.mpja.com> just had some thermostat controllers which could be rigged as alarms as well as displays for about $8.

Previous message was cut off. MPJA in Florida has some thermostat controllers which can display as well as alarm for about $8.
