Filter Gasoline in a Racor Diesel Filter ?

I am switching from a diesel to a Yamaha outboard due to lack of parts for the outdrive. I have a standard Racor filter unit with the water separator at the bottom but I see a note in the Defender catalog that says "diesel only". Do I need a get a complete new unit for gas or can I convert the existing Racor somehow?

I also have a 32 gal Moeller below deck tank. It does have a sender but never used. I see in the Defender cat that they have a listing for a sender for gas and a different one for diesel. Any idea why?

Re: Filter Gasoline in a Racor Diesel Filter ?

Gas and diesel are two different cats. Gas vapors explode quite readily with the correct oxygen/gas mixture whereas diesel is much less likely to explode. If you are switching fuels then you may need all new fuel lines and bilge blowers. Believe me, you do not want to have a gas leak into the bilge of your boat. I have seen what happens when the bilge blower was not used after refueling at the fuel dock. It was not pretty. It is worth spending the money to have a knowledgeable consultant check out your installation.

If something says "diesel fuel only" do not use it for gasoline...

Todays ethanol fuels will not agree with yesterdays diesel fuel gaskets. Upgrade / replace all of the hoses related to you're fuel system, making sure they are recommended for ethanol fuel.

Gasoline filters need to be all metal.

New Fuelines.

Need to do someting with the diesel return line 'cause you don't need it anymore
IIWMB....I would do all new.....not try to convert the existing.
