Fresh Water Pump Grease Fitting

Folks,

I was just reviewing my engine (Westerbeke 46) maintenance schedule and it says:

"Lubricate fresh water pump (Grease fitting - refill capacity 1.2 cu. in.)"

I have never heard of this! I referred to the parts diagram and, sure enough, I found the grease fitting and then went and located it on my engine.

Question: do these fittings fit a universal grease gun? What type of grease are you supposed to use?

Re: Fresh Water Pump Grease Fitting

I've been using a thick lithium grease. An old chandlery repair shop had actual water pump grease in the shop but none for sale. It seemed similar to the lithium I am using.

Question: do fresh water pump impellers go bad like raw water impellers?
