Re: Fuel Consumption 75hp engine..

My Offshore 44 with Perkins 4.236 (70 hp) burns 1.5 gph at 1800 rpm making 7 knots. Prop is 3 blade 24x18. When simply charging at 1500 rpm she burns 1.1 gph.

Kaufman 47, Westerbeke 71C, 30000 lbs. Our last trip, 530 nm, 39 days to/from Dry Tortuga's. Lots of motoring. Lots of charging batteries. Some sailing. We carry 100 gallons diesel. I calculated 8/10ths gallons per hour overall.

200 liters of fuel. 4jh4t. 75 hp. 650 nmi at 2000 rpm in flat water. At 6.5 knots. 38000 pounds.
You will likely want to stop twice is my guess.

Re: Fuel Consumption 75hp engine..

I agreed with rayculum .I have the same 4JH3 TDE yanmar engine and i Have similar fuel consume .Normally I cruise at 1800 rpm at 7 knots .My boat it's heavy 22 Tons and I have a 1000 liters tank .Indeed all of that are related with wind and waves .My boat is full keel long range cruiser .
regards

Re: Fuel Consumption 75hp engine..

Hi Boaty ! Could be a fun time or year to be making a delivery in the path of potential mistral. I hve a 2004 43ds with the Yanmar 4JH3-TE 75hp engine which i guess is what yr boat will have. I suggest you do not look at figures for the 4JH4-TE which was slightly modified to give improved economy. I think the later 45ds (2008 onwards) has the 4JH4-TE engine.

When i brought my boat from Weymouth all the way to the Adriatic (4,500nm in total that year) i had ample chance to measure the consumption. I found the sweet spot in terms of load on the engine (& noise) and movement of the boat through the water to be about 2,100 rpm (=/-100). At this level she would be doing 5.5 - 6 kn. If the hull is dirty then deduct 0.5 kn from this. Consumption was regularly 2.9-3.0 l/hr. I had a fixed 20" prop at the time which i have now changed to a feathering 20" Featherstream from Darglow Engineering which in fact gives slightly better performance for the same rpm. (This prop is v similar in design to the well-known Maxprop, but somewhat cheaper. )
After crossing frm the Baleares instead of Cagliari you could stop at SW corner of Sardinia at Carloforte which is a pleasant stop but the fuel quay is dubious for 2m draft. Plenty of depth 3nm across the water at Calasetta but the village of Carloforte is a nicer place to relax for a day or two after crossing from Baleares.

Best of luck
Andrew

Re: Fuel Consumption 75hp engine..

Another idea Boaty. Depending at what temp level you set the fridge and yr preference for a cold beer of chilled wine it can be using about 5A for 30% of its cycle. Add a good block of ice to both fridges before you leave or at one of yr stopping points on the way.
Not sure about the alternator that will be on yr engine but mine has the optional 80Ah alternator which is a great help for battery charging. Not that i need the use of it nowadays since i have added 2 x 150W of solar and a 1200 Rutland windgen, in a good blow of 25-40 kn latter has generated as much as 440W but generally only 15-25% of total.

Hi Salty.. Good info, thanks..
The boat is a 2002 model.. I was thinking of just not running the fridge as this time of year hot food n drinks are more important out there..
Hear you on the mistral, this time of year things cycle fast between screaming Norther's to head winds to nothing, last time I made this trip in March we had little wind all the way to Corfu.. but it was a big Lagoon so no fuel problems and did it non stop. I also prefer the S coast of Sicily over running through the Strait..
At the moment the view on Passage Weather is keeping to its annual pattern, just hoping it becomes a milder version of the same..

Salty.. one question, how long did it take to recharge your batteries while sailing.. pre your energy updates.
Would like to try and make Sardinia in one hop if possible so if I can reduce running time while sailing that would be great.. was figuring around two hrs to get them fully charged considering they'll be drawing while charging.
Forewarned is forearmed..

Re: Fuel Consumption 75hp engine..

My experience has been that most engine alternators are governed to give an initial high rate of charge then taper of substantially...
Additionally, batteries also have different rates of absorption......
No easy answer to your question here.
Were it me, I'd have a few 5 gallon containers on board as back up.
While I'm at it....some spare fuel filters is not a bad idea, as you have no idea what the state of the fuel delivery to the engine may be in.
Finally, the Bennie has a house bank, typically a pair of large bats and a smaller bat for the engine. These can be isolated from each other or connected together. Keeping the starting bat isolated from the house bank can give you some peace of mind. They can all be charged together but isolated after the engine is **** down.

That bit I'm cool with.. its the consumption rate that's the concern, has to be a fast delivery ie; arrive as close to April 1st as possible.
Arrive at boat 16th, provision then sail on first decent window.. trouble is the weather pattern SE Spain is calm or light variables before another hoolie barrels down from the North..
But thanks for the input..

Re: Fuel Consumption 75hp engine..

I don't know how you do this business.

Having to leave or be somewhere by a specific date has always resulted in problems of one sort or another for me..

I don't if you can open this....it gives the fuel consumption/rpm chart...

4JH4-TE - YANMAR Marine Internationalhttps://www.yanmar.com › ... › Engines › Search Engines

It seems around 4l/hr at cruise is a good number....about 1 gal/hr, depending on British or US

Cheers, just thought I'd cast it out there for real world experience..
On the chart 1800 to 2100rpm looks to be the sweet spot.. be curious what speed that'll give me.. regardless is good enough for charging.

Re: Fuel Consumption 75hp engine..

My first boat had limited battery power and only a small alternator.
It had a small upright freezer, so I would fill this with ice only, kept in a plastic bag, and run the engine or fridge/battery only long enough to " freeze" this bag of ice, or "refreeze" as the case may be...then I'd shut it down. Takes about an hour.
It will keep stuff " cool"....not " cold"....you have to resist the temptation to put ice in your evening sundowner though. Repeat this process as needed.....say 6 hours or so.....
