Fuel filter replacement

Looking for suggestions of a replacement for my Racor 110a diesel fuel filter. This housing adds a level of difficulty when changing filters because you've got to use tools. All the fuel filters I see for sale look like they have a removable top that can be opened by hand. Is there such a thing as overkill when it comes to GPH filtering? I have a Yanmar 3JH2e engine, 34 HP, on a 37ft monohull sailboat.

Fuel filter replacement

Due largely to availability of filters and spare parts, I would go with a Racor Series 500, I believe since yours is likely in the engine room the MA I believe which has the metal bowl cover is called for.
Myself I went with the dual setup, although it has not been necessary and the filters are so easy to change, maybe it's not needed, your call.

Yep, that's the beastie a64 is describing. Just be sure to mount it in a location with enough overhead to pull the filter easily.

Fuel filter replacement

Hopkins Carter a vendor here that posts as Hopcar may can get you a better price too.
And I don't think the filter comes with fittings, and they are a special fitting too, and are sized by fuel line, so don't forget the fittings

Re: Fuel filter replacement

I prefer the Racor 500 like the others. These are rated at 60gph max flow. They do not spec the minimum flow rate as far as I have seen. I've had mechanics tell mr that using them at too low a rate causes their centrifugal water separation to not work effectively. So they may not be appropriate for a smaller engine.

Re: Fuel filter replacement

Zeehag, can you tell me more about that fuel filter? You don't have to manually fill the lines and filters with diesel after a filter change?

The element just lifts out the top of the filter body, so no filling is needed.

There is some air of course as you took a wetted filter out and put in a dry one that sucks up fuel, but it's not so much that her engine can't just pass it though apparently.

fuel goes into filter BELOW level of cartridge. no priming needed post cartridge replacement.
tha racor pictured above is OLD not fg filter. that one needs to be reprimed yukky idea. i LOVE my fg so much i bought 2 for 500 usd in manzanillo mx. they are 500 each usd in usa.

see the threaded areas for fittings. you need to buy the racor fittings separately from filter.
there is NO WAY for air to pass into fuel delivery portion of filter. this is a new filter, not the old antiquated version. more money but worth every penny.
