Hard Shifting. Yanmar SB12

Hello. I have a Yanmar SB12 and the shift is stiff. It takes quite a force to shift to forward and reverse. I am wondering if this is normal as I just bought it. I have broken 2 shift cables now. I want to fix it before I break another one. Any ideas why or if this is normal? I attached the shift cable and can't even shift it with my hand on the cable. If anyone has a similar engine please describe how the shift is; easy, hard, clunking into gear? thanks!

RPM should be low to shift, and the cable needs to not have any sharp angles.
Will it shift ok if you do it without the cable ,by hand?
If not, the speed or gearbox is suspect.
If it shifts fine without the cable attached it is in the cable or the run of the cable is too tight.
