Help Needed Wiring My Engine and Gauges

Hi there,

are there any auto electricians on here that could help me decipher how to wire my engine and gauges.

I have some plans of the components and can take pictures of what i have so that you can see.

It should be pretty simple for someone in the know as its really only a yanmar ysm8 and a set of vetus gauges plus a starter switch.

if you think you can help, send me a pm and we can go from there.

I dont really need to start a big old forum chat to do this, i would just really appreciate help from one or two people who are familiar with wiring like this.

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

Re: Help Needed Wiring My Engine and Gauges

i have a yanmar ysb8 sitting in my yard,if you have a wiring diagram for the vetus panel i can probably help.

failing that unwrap the wiring tree back to the guages so you can identify the colour coding to each guage.

Re: Help Needed Wiring My Engine and Gauges

Hi Atoll,

Firstly thanks for the offer, what im trying to do is just connect the basics to my motor. i wanted to use the vetus tacho as its meant to be adjustable so that i can tune it to my engines rpm. my engine has two senders for water and oil and im not sure if these can be connected to the vetus water and oil gauges, maybe there incompatible?

Secondly as you have a YSM8 motor sitting there you dont have a control panel for the ysm 8 that you want to sell do you?, that would make things easier straight of the bat.

Thirdly, the yanmar has a wiring diagram, that sides pretty easy. Only issue that i have with that is the tacho wires, there's only two of them and they are blue which is meant to go to the "g" on the tacho and orange which is meant to go to "w" on the tacho.

The vetus panel doesn't have color codes, its all black, with a few purples i can figure out what some of the wires are just by looking at the individual marks etc.

So my first issues would be,

*can my blue and orange wires go to the vetus tacho, and to which post.

* can my yanmar senders be used with the vetus ones or is it not possible.

* the amp guage has a + and - on the back of it, where do they go to? a break in the positive line? the charge line off the alternator?

Thanks for your time mate, i really do appreciate the help

(some pictures and the wiring diagram for the ysm are attached)

Re: Help Needed Wiring My Engine and Gauges

what you got here is an old style engine and alternator/generator,and a modern panel,so the tacho sender may not work with the vetus guage.
but assuming the sender is an interupter type this may work.
from the back of guage to yanmar wiring tree.

i am assuming you have the battery connected to engine ground, and engine pos+ on the starter motor.

(ground terminal to black wire AND orange wire (to engine ground and battery negative and panel neg)
middle terminal to blue wire.
b+ terminalto red wire.(via on /off switch, ampmeter and pos supply to panel)
edit:!!recheched diagram!!!
(it may be that it works in the opposite direction,so your blue stays in the middle, but the orange goes to the ground, and b+red wire to neg side of on off switch) (it may also not work with this thype of guage,as according to the wiring diagram there is an exciter circuit to the sender when the starter button is pressed!!!)

senders
,the oil sender is only (on /off) not a pressure sender,blue/white wire.
this will work with the indicator light, but not the guage.

water temp will give a reading, but not nessacarily the correct one if impedences are not matched ,,brown wire to "S" on back of guage.

might be worh getting new compatible senders and guages for temp and pressure.

amp guage, red wire from engine to + on guage ,-minus on guage to red wire to on /off switch.

field wire ,(white and red wire) to red indicator light, then to neg side of on/off switch.

this should work but it might be easier to find the correct panel on ebay.co.uk,lots of parted out ysb/ysm engines over here.

Re: Help Needed Wiring My Engine and Gauges

Thanks for that, i will try it in the next few days and see how we go.

I didn't expect the oil and water senders that i have to work with the panel but it would have been nice if they did, and yes i might look at replacing them.

also i have already tried to find a yanmar control panel, have searched everywhere, to no avail. even put a post here on CF, didn't get any answers.

once i was even looking at a new control panel, but there aren't any left according to yanmar, and the only part that i can get to make one is the tacho which is over $800 for just the tacho.

if push comes to shove then i can do without it all for the time being, i can link lights and buzzers to the existing yanmar wiring and use my ear for the tacho, it would just be nice to finish it as its almost the last job to do prior to launching my little boat for her maiden voyage. Whoo Hoo

thanks again, i will be in touch once i have given it a go.
