Re: Help - YANMAR 4JH2E engine only idles ?

@SkipperPete
Thanks so much for your input here.

I'm going to take your advice and do exactly as you mentioned in order of operation.

I'm about to travel back to the boat now & am hoping to reinstall the injectors as they've been soaking over night in some carby cleaner. (as per image)

Ok, one more tip is to avoid applying too much pressure to those little pipes ( leakoff line) on the injector body, if one gets broken off you’ll need a new injector body and your pipes are rusty at the solder joint so a bit fragile already.

Re: Help - YANMAR 4JH2E engine only idles ?

Still Not Starting
I reinstalled the injectors, checked for fuel flow to the injectors & then tightened them down after bleeding all air out ( both at the fuel filter & then each injector )

@Skippermate - Can you direct me to where I can remove the fuel pump cover to expose the " RACK " (an image might help ) because after pulling the cold start cable the rack might be stuck. note: The engine was idling before pulling the cold start cable. Now engine only cranks over. I have traced the cable to the back of the pump and it feels as though the linkage is rotating back into position. The cable does feel very slack though... is this normal ?

NOTE: I am wondering if the Solenoid is simply stuck open ? Q. Does the solenoid operate when using the cold start cable ?

Re: Help - YANMAR 4JH2E engine only idles ?

You should have the injectors actually serviced by the injector shop. They will do a “pop off” test to ensure they actually function correctly….
Soaking in carb cleaner is NOT sufficient.

The technician quoted 1.3K to service them.. I have confidence they are opening g as I cleaned each pin & tested that they slide in/out easily without binding. I also checked the jets spray ( 5 per injector (

This was never about the injectors. And yes, the pump would be about 1.3 to service.

The picture you posted of the injector pump clearly shows the cover plate( held on by 5 phillips head screws)

I'm on the boat now. I notice there's no solenoid. In the user manual it states its "optional".

Next up I'll remove the injector pump cover to access the rack.

After that I feel it might be time to get a technician in.

Do you only have a cable stop? If you need to find a good Yanmar mechanic it might be useful to phone Minards and ask them for a trusted mechanic and ....a fuel injection tech.
Those cover plate screws are usually bloody tight.

Re: Help - YANMAR 4JH2E engine only idles ?

If the engine runs and is making a lot of smoke, injectors would be a culprit. If it only idles, sounds like fuel flow. If it starts for a rev or two then dies don’t forget get to check for adequate fuel. A while back that was my symptom. Couldn’t puzzle it out, so called a mechanic. His first step was to stick the tank. “You ain’t got no fuel, bubba.” I had been relying on a fuel gauge that was stuck in the half full position. Rather embarrassing.

Re: Help - YANMAR 4JH2E engine only idles ?

@MickeyRouse.. Dooh !!! yup fuel helps

I've removed the fuel pump.. Took me bloody ages as the engine has terrible accessibility (especially on the fuel pump side) next up I plan to dismantle it & clean it up. Just nervous as this is my first pump rebuild. note: I have marked the gear teeth so I can avoid disrupting the timing when I put it back together as per image.
