High Idle

My tractor has a four cylinder diesel. Given current economic conditions it isits alot these days. I got on it the other day to run it around a little and the idle was stuck at 1500. It usually idles at 750. I am going to look at the throttle linkage. Hopefully that will take care of it but does anyone have any other ideas on what would cause a diesel engine to idle high?

You're on it - fuel determines idle.

Here is the problem. Throttle cable isn't very strong. Thanks for the advice.

Stores are closed today to get parts. I am thinking of taking the eye off the end of the throttle cable and then drilling out the part where the cable connects to the eye a full 1/16" bigger than the cable that fits in to the hole and then filling the hole with epoxy and then placing the cable back into the hole and letting the epoxy set around it. Does anyone see a better solution. I will order the part tommorrow or Monday but it will be easier to move the tractor if it is going faster than idle.

Temporally, how about a spring for closing and a twine thru loops for acceleration.

Now why didn't I think of that Okie fix. I'm trying the Epoxy and then when (IF) that fails I'll resort to the string andpring method. Thanks Del

Not know what kind of engine it is, it could be a couple of things.

Stuck or sticking rack in fuel injection pump

or cold start adjustment....

Before I started fixing the cable, I would disconnect it and then start the engine....and see if it idles down

Whoops...just saw your cable picture......in any case check and make sure the throttle arm on the injection pump works smoothly w/o hanging up

Thanks Del Gord and Cheif:

Unexpected rain today and I left the tractor out. Supposed to clear up tommorrow and I will use my Jerri rig throttle cable to park under protection. BTW Cheif I was able to throttle the engine down by putting alot of pressure on the cable. Then when I disconnected it idled fine.

I drilled a hole thru the Eye fitting and then looped the throttle cable thru the hole. I then took some JB Weld and wrapped it around the cable to try and make the eye fitting and the cable a unified piece. I'll post if it works or doesn't work.

Well, since we're at it. Why would my tractor RPM gauge just suddenly go to max and stay there? No matter what the engine RPM is the gauge is pegged to the max. Have to adjust throttle by ear (not a bad thing, just inconvenient).
Yanmar engine in a JD tractor.
Since I haven't really looked at the wiring to the alternator yet maybe this post is premature but since we were on the subject of tractors I thought I could get some free advice. : )

My Yanmar Marine Dealer and Mack Boring couldn't supply me with anything.....
