Re: How do I take off this shaft?

detach coupling from the gear box push shaft outboard, then use a pulley puller to push shaft out of the coupling .
use heat on the coupling to loosen
see link for pulley puller

Re: How do I take off this shaft?

Get some longer clamp screws, run a tap all the way through the threaded side of the clamp holes, get some steel plate that just fits in the slot.

Put the steel in the slot, thread the longer screws in to the back, lightly holding the steel in place.

Remove the bolts holding the flanges together.

Tighten the 2 clamp screws to slightly spread the clamping portion of the flange.

Apply heat. Oxy/acetylene is best, then Mapp, propane as a last resort.

Whilst somehow holding the shaft/coupling asm away from the transmission flange, as quickly as possible after heating, see if a few sharp raps with a medium heavy hammer will get it started.

If not, the 'plate, spacer and bolt' method and heat would be the nest step.

Cutting should be a last resort, it surely doesn't look very bad...

Re: How do I take off this shaft?

I agree with other posts-dig the silicone out of that odd hole-you may fing a set/grub screw.
Some info on various brands of couplings-including your volvo type I believe

Hope this helps/ Len

No matter how much the two parts of the coupler pinch the shaft, that is not what locks the shaft into the coupler, that job is done by a pin or set screw that I suspect is hiding under the black.

It looks like it has been butchered in the past so no telling what's under there now. Figure that out and the coupler and shaft will separate.

Use of force when you don't know how something works usually results in the purchase of new things in your life, whether you wanted to or not.
+1 on this train of thought 👍

Re: How do I take off this shaft?

I have a similar coupling and it has a bolt in the end of the shaft that is only accessible by removing the transmission flange and swing the engine out of the way so a puller can be used.

Re: How do I take off this shaft?

Thank you all for your help!

Today the shaft came out and revealed the mystery of the black sealent you see in the photos. It looks like someone tried to cover their drilling attempt with the sealent. I scraped it off and under it is a drill out attempt - of what I assume was a set screw. The shaft has a corresponding hole where that set screw is supposed to be but there is no set screw. My guess is that a previous attempt ended up with the set screw being broken.

Anyways, the shaft came out after I flexed the two parts of the flange apart by using two thick flat screwdrivers so thank you for that tip!

Now I need to get the bent shaft straightened out!! It's about a quarter of an inch bent...

Re: How do I take off this shaft?

Congratulations. I got mine out today too after 8 days. 2 cans of PB, 2 cans of CRC Freeze-off, One acetylene torch, six bolts, two homemade flange presses, a new 7" disc grinder (which I killed), a new reciprocating saw, 5 diamond discs and two diamond blades.

I gave up and cut the bastard off in 11 pieces.

A little of your favorite anti corrosion compound on things like this can save a whole lot of pain in the future.
My favorite is Corrosion-X
