How many hours should a Volvo d2-40 last

We have a pair of Volvo D2-40's on our 44 foot catamaran. They are 6 or 7 years old.

They each have 2200 hours on them. the engines are serviced every 100 hours or so as recommended here in Oz. It seems too frequent to me but I am no mechanic.

After the last service the mechanic said that we should consider replacement of the engines because they have a lot of hours and there will inevitably be the need to replace some major parts going forward and that might not be economic.

I was astonished that the life of a diesel engine could be so short. Can this be correct? Any thoughts?

That would be awful short life, but there were some oddball small engines .... especially in the 90's if I remember right. Are these the ones with the rubber timing belts?

It sounds like you need to sack your cheating mechanic!

Read the owners manual for correct servicing and SACK the conman!

10,000 hours for a well maintained engine...

I change the engine oil after every 100 hours ( give or take ) ..... nada mas

Service the engine every 100 hours? Every 5 days serious motoring? I don't think so...

Name your mechanic, so we all know who not to employ. Is he known as Golden spanners?

What does the 'servicing 'involve??

When I change the oil I change the oil filter.... does that count as servicing??

x100. If we look at this from another angle. Diesel engine in autos has a duty cycle of 1,000,000 miles which converted to about 16,666 hours (driving 60 mph).

So most marine engines are babied to death by the owner. Therefore, a marine engine should last over 10,000 hours.

It seems to me that the engines are just broken in. Why on earth would you replace them if they are working well? VERY dodgy recommendation.

Looking at my D2-40F manual the servicing is every 500 hours/annually. Perhaps you have an earlier version that requires more frequent oil changes? Take a look at the operator's manual. My guess is that you should be doing the annual change of fluids, plus some inspection/clean/adjust items at that time, and that's it. Unless, of course, there are problems.

Re: How many hours should a Volvo d2-40 last

I have a d2-40b in my 2008 Bavaria 37 with 1360hrs. Manual says service at 500 hours or 12 months. I have owned her for two years and put 190 hrs on the hour meter, 1500 n.m's and just serviced the motor. There are a LOT of thieving mechanics out there. If your motors are running ok and no excessive smoke or excessive oil loss, I would also keep servicing and using. 100 hour service time is for d2-30 and smaller engines per my owners manual. You can download your manual from the Volvo site.
