jabsco engine water pump, Ford Lees 2701e

1 just wondering what all the fuss is about marine water pumps? a car one costs about $50, a marine one 10x as much. why do i 'need' an expensive impeller when a car-style metal paddle wheel would work as well? (the thing really irking me is that my existing 40yr old jabsco has an impeller driven by a 3/4in drive from the engine, and the seal for the shaft is proving very difficult to find. it appears to come as a kit from jabsco, costing nearly $100 . quite an expensive annual cost...

2 query the second, is if i choose to marry a spare if antiquated jabsco pump to the 3/4in gear driven shaft from the engine, how would i join both shafts 'male to male'? i assume i could use a propeller shaft style boss?.

any thoughts people?

thnx in advance
