Well, kind of.
The Multifuel engines used what was termed by the inventor as a "Hypercycle" engine.
In a "normal" diesel the injector squirts a fine mist into the cylinder, in the "Multifuel" engine the fuel squirts a stream into a "cup" built into the top of the piston, this allows heat dissipation and a slower vaporization of "hot" fuels to slow the burn rate.
They also have a much higher compression ratio.
Yes, you add motor oil when using other fuels.
The engines also have a device in the injector pump that adjusts for the density of the fuel, using a lighter weight fuel results in a smaller injection charge.
They're not bad engines when operated within their envelope, but soldiers tended to abuse them.

Re: Kerosene for diesel engine

Have used kerro in Gardner and other slow reving diesels with 50%clarified sump oil ,verry common in the fishing industry ,that don’t have much use for high reving diesels, tens of thousands of hrs I /e 50 k plus ,no problems at all ,also jet A 1 and as stated helicopter fuel just add some two stroke oil .⛵️⚓️

Re: Kerosene for diesel engine

I've heard of diesel with some kerosene referred to as winter diesel. Often used in northern areas during the coldest months.

Yes, it's a lighter weight distillate, it's called #1 Diesel.
Pulling up a line from an earlier post, (#11).

"my understanding from talking to the owner is that if you add 2qts of Kero to 5gal of #2 diesel you will essentially have #1 diesel."

I do that with old canola oil mixed 10% with diesel & it works fine but we have a 1980 yanmar IDI diesel that only needs about 10micron filtration & only has about 2400 psi injection pressure. Wouldnt be trying it in a common rail that needs 2 micron filtration with over 20,000 psi injection pressure.
Mind you I like to experiment
Havent tried kero but its more expensive here now afaik

Jet fuel for civilian use (Jet A) is essentially kerosine. A jet engine will run just fine on diesel fuel, just a little hotter than spec. But I don't recommend it since it is not FAA approved.

Re: Kerosene for diesel engine

Many years ago i contracted to a remote mission that was donated a large number of out of date Jet A1(power kero) in 200 litre(44 gallon) drums. They were at loss as what to use it for until a visitor ,who had worked for Shell Oil for many years gave them the ratio of engine oil to mix with the jet A1,i myself was alarmed at this as i had used kero for cleaning and as cutting fluid and questioned the wisdom of it.
Anyway using the mixture they burned the lot in diesel tractors and four wheel drives,i was associated with the mission for a further eight years and there was no injector/injector pump failures, there was a mixture of DPA(rotary) and Bosch copy inline(Denso).

Real men use kero for cleaning teeth.

Re: Kerosene for diesel engine

I use to smell aviation kerosene everyday. Can’t picture it running a diesel. 50 years ago it would blow the occasion blade of if an engine.
Stinks I think I’m still paranoid to smell it

It's not Kero Syrup, it's Karo syrup, and if you want a real syrup, you'll get the stuff that comes from a Maple tree instead of from corn.
Corn is for whiskey.

Re: Kerosene for diesel engine

My Cummins 6CTA manual says diesel, kerosene, Jet A, JP-5 are OK (suggests a blend of 5% lube oil) but Jet B, JP-4 and JP-8 is not OK. Apparently, some fuel injection pumps are better suited than others. The P7100 is OK to run with the kerosene fuels.

I am tempted to try to get some Jet A1 from a nearby airport, it is 40% less expensive but I have no idea how to ask for it

Re: Kerosene for diesel engine

Forget Kero; A mate, Dutch total gypsy, has used old fryer oil for years. Restaurants put it out by the dumpster in handy 5 gal jugs for disposal and don't care if you take it. He passes thru an old tee shirt and apparently has never had an issue with fuel hoses or starting

I would think there may be some metering issues with the fuel pump or injectors, but not sure.
Kerosene lacks lubricity. Some people fix this by adding 2 stroke oil to the kerosene . The fuel pumps especially the older variety love a bit of lubricity in order to give you the life you expect.
