Leaking muffler

This is a Vetus design. There is sea water gushing from a hole. Is an LSS type waterlock. What is inside looks like a rivet Is it time to change it or can it be fixed?

Re: Leaking muffler

Welcome to the forum, Charles.

No photograph came through, so an informed answer is difficult. How about trying again?

Re: Leaking muffler

This is probably the manual for your Vetus. Did you read it to see if it sheds any light on your situation?

Re: Leaking muffler

Yes, a picture would be best to help see the hole.

I don't remember any rivet being in their water lift mufflers designs. Did someone rivet a mounting flange to hold it in place and it eventually broke that flange off the muffler?

While they are relatively expensive, would replace it to eliminate a repair that may not hold/be a constant pita. A new muffler would also stop any potential of exhaust gas/CO from building up in the boat.

Re: Leaking muffler

Not that tough to fix a hole in plastic. Drain the muffler, 45° the hole edges with a oversize drill bit, mix epoxy and fiberglass strands, high density filler, or both until putty like. Fill hole, cover with tape until it sets. It should last the life of the muffler.

Assuming your not underway… which in my case I was.

It’s quiet a simple repair. I wouldn’t lose sleep.
