Lifespan of Perkins M90

OK, I did a search in the forums here, and didn't find any discussion on this motor in particular. I'm half heartedly looking at a boat with a Perkins M90 (don't know which gearbox yet). It's nearly 20 years old and has around 7500 hours on it. Would you consider this lightly used or ready for the scrap yard? I totally understand there's no way to answer without knowing its history/use/abuse. I'm not looking for detailed analysis, just is 7500 hours a lot for this motor, or 'should' it have lots of life left in it? Rest assured if I proceed I'll get both a marine and engine survey.

Thanks in advance for your opinion!

I think the M90 is a 4326 under the covers, It sure looks familiar. if so lots of information out there about this model, ours is 40 years old!!!!

I am sure an expert will along soon to confirm/deny this soon

Re: Lifespan of Perkins M90

The M90 is a great engine, with proper care and maintenance it will last and last, oil changes are a must, best quality oil filters, and parts if needed are still readily available, I have 10,882 hrs and am looking forward to another 5 to 7 thousand before tearing in and rebuilding it

Wow a bit of deja vu, I just came across an old post about perkins M90 (Perkins 4-236M), My poor Perkins began smoking (light blue which is indicative of worn rings especially oil and scraper ring), at around 15,500 hours and at 17,000 I have decided it is time for a rebuild.
