Long range electric development

The future is clearly headed in this direction. They claim 50nm range at 22 knots between charging. I would have to believe that a cat going much slower may do better.

Read the whole article before rejecting. They have an innovating design that significantly increases efficiency. They use higher rpms and have a unique design to eliminate cavitation.

Still the problem for cruising is energy generation.

Re: Long range electric development

I’ve read the article. It’s for small to medium sized foiling power boats.

For that it looks great.

For a cruising boat, not a chance, small props really cuts into efficiency. Pod is a drag item that doesn’t need to be there.

I'm not all that impressed at the small run-about level of boat. 22 knots is barely planing speed. The problems they have solved are incremental, not revolutionary. I also don't really like "zero emissions" claims, because the power has to come from somewhere, and in this case it would appear to be shore power, not solar.

Re: Long range electric development

And of course at the end of the day the total range/speed will depend on how much battery storage you have. In that regard the improvements in storage capacity, density, weight are also incremental.

A 25’ power boat will plane at about 13-14kt. Dinghies at slower speeds.
22kt is not barely planing unless you are talking about a 40’ boat.

Zero emissions will depend on the source of the electricity for recharging. The world is moving to renewables. Even if the source of shore power to recharge the batteries is coal there would be less CO2 emissions than if there was a petrol/gas engine on the boat itself.
