Re: Looking for a great book on maintaining Diesel engines

For a straightforward "recipe" book of diesel engine maintenance procedures, search amazon.com for Diesel Engine Maintenance by author Jean Luc Pallas
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=jean+luc+...ref=nb_sb_noss
Pallas is an easy, very instructive, concise read of maintenance and repair activities,.
Nigel Calder writes on diesels, but it is time intensive to digest and extract the essentials from verbose details.

What Westerbeke motor do you have? I'm certain someone here will have a manual for you. I have workshop and parts manuals for the Perkins 4.108 which is the same as the Westerbeke version if that's what you have installed.

First he told us about an incident when, in the middle of doing an oil change, he was called to Happy Hour. The next day he started the engine up. It ran for a few minutes, then seized - he having completely forgotten to put the new oil in after being called away the previous day. The story, and the way he told it, certainly broke the ice and established a great rapport between him and his audience.

He then explained that a diesel engine (Volvos excepted) only needs three things to stay healthy: clean fuel, Clean Fuel, and CLEAN FUEL (and regular oil changes). He then spent the rest of his allotted hour telling us how how to keep fuel and tanks clean.

Great guy!
👍And, he might have added, clean exhaust elbows, especially on yanmar engines.

Yes, the elbow on mine failed, and I was also advised that it is more of a problem on Yanmars than others.

Re: Looking for a great book on maintaining Diesel engines

Books are great for helping you diagnose a problem, but in the end you still need to be able to fix the problem without making it worse. If you're not handy, I recommend getting your hands dirty. Look in your area for a marine diesel engine class where you can get some hands-on experience. A one day class isn't going to give you enough detail, look for something that's at least a week long.

Re: Looking for a great book on maintaining Diesel engines

I don't think any one book has it all. I get a little here and there but mostly from the manufacturers manual.

I'd go into it but I don't want to be sued for liable - even though I believe I would win as truth is supposed to be a defense - but I don't need the hassle
