Low power in forward, normal reverse?

I've got a Yanmar YSE-12, but im pretty sure the problem I've got is just in the shifter linkage. The stop for the shifter to be in the right position for foward was just a screw in a 2x4 and it broke off one day, but after running the engine and messing around with were exactly it seems to want to sit to be engaged in foward, i cant get it to properly give me more then a little bit of power in foward. Reverse is still strong and normal, but im not sure what the problem is.
