MD6A Fuel Bleeding

A question about bleeding the fuel line on a Volvo Penta MD6A. What's the best way to bleed the fuel line when replacing the in line fuel filters? The service manual refers to a hand primer to advance the fuel. Where does this primer go and how does it fit in? I am aware that some marine diesel engines have built in primers but I don't think the MD6A has one. Recomendations for a hand primer to use here?

Thanks!

Re: MD6A Fuel Bleeding

The fuel primer pump on the MD6A is incorporated into the low pressure lift pump. There is a small spring loaded thumb lever on the side of the lift pump which is pressed up and down to prime the fuel filter and high pressure fuel pump.

In normal operation, the lift pump is driven by an arm which rides on a lobe on the camshaft, but if the engine happens to stop with the lever on the top of the cam lobe, then the thumb lever won't work. If this happens, just rotate the crankshaft a complete turn and the lever will come off of the cam lobe and then function. You can tell if the lever is on the lobe because there will be very little resistance to moving the lever, and of course, no fuel flow.

Re: MD6A Fuel Bleeding

Greetings and belated welcome aboard the CF, Klig.

Lever on fuel pump (Item 1), as Doug noted.
