Mercury 40 4 stroke 2016 no charging

My question is, will a stator for a 2003 work on a 2016. I have already put it on but still getting no charge. Once I know whether the 2003 is the same part number as the 2016 I just took off, I will change the voltage regulator. I had a loose connection to the positive battery terminal which made the connection very hot. I ended up hearing a pop and saw an arch/spark upper end of engine. The 2003 stator looks identical and fit in perfect under the flywheel. I ordered another voltage regulator in hopes that is my problem. Not the stator. I’m having trouble on boats.net understanding what years the stator will fit

I didn’t hook battery cables opposite. Can’t find any burn marks anywhere. I also can’t find any fuses other than a cluster of four fuses in the front of the motor. Thanks for any insight

You should be able to measure voltage from the stator without it even being connected to the rectifier. It’s not like an alternator it’s like a generator meaning it will make power with no power applied just by being spun in a magnetic field.
It’s rare for a stator to go bad and I believe they are easily checked by checking resistance.
However it’s been my experience that rectifiers go bad way more often than stators. I’ve never had to change a stator, but have changed several rectifiers, my experience was with motorcycles, but I believe they are the same.

Is the rectifier what I’m calling the voltage regulator

Nevermind. Just looked it up same thing. Thanks. That’s what I’m leaning towards now. Thanks
