Re: Mercury 9.9 2 stroke will not restart

Did you remove, clean and blow out the carb yet? When you removed the carb was there any fuel in the float bowl? Do you use ethanol gas mixed with the oil?

Re: Mercury 9.9 2 stroke will not restart

What you describe is a fuel starved engine. Sometimes the vent cap on the fuel tank gets clogged and won't allow fuel to flow. Sometimes a bit of junk gets in the fuel line. Sometimes a fuel filter gets clogged.

You said it doesn't start but does it fire? Does it give you any indication it might want to start by making a popping sound?

Re: Mercury 9.9 2 stroke will not restart

A probable cause for this is a stuck carb float needle. If you can not get in then none can get out to the piston and spark plug to fire. You can take carb off and remove float bowl and check easily.

Sometimes the pickup tube in your tank can get clogged as well so check from the bottom of the tank all the way to the carb for free flowing fuel.

Let us know if you get it sorted out. We'd all be interested to hear what might be causing the problem.

Well then I guess I was wrong but if you ever do have a fuel issue you have some guidelines.

What was the electrical problem?

Let me rephrase my comment, the problem was electrical, I would like to thank everyone for their help, clearly I did not have a clue so all responses were helpful.

Skip John; it was a stator and module, ran great for one trip. Now it starts, then stops like it's running out of gas, so I replaced the fuel tank, and entire fuel line, same result:

I know you've already checked and replaced stuff but that sounds like there is a vent on the tank that isn't opened. Take the cap off the tank and open the little vent cap and see if you can blow through it.

The second thing it sounds like is that the fuel gets into the fuel bowl enough to run for a few minutes and when it runs out of fuel the float doesn't open the needle or there is something in the fuel passage on the carb and the float bowl will not fill quickly enough to keep the engine running.

Don't give up. I think you can sort it out by process of elimination.

Supposed to be a self vented tank, but there may be something I dint do to activate that feature. I'll give it a try. Thank you Skip John.

It might be time to study up on taking the carb apart?

Re: Mercury 9.9 2 stroke will not restart

Seems the issue was an arc from a worn spark plug wire, replaced the wire, seems to run fine. We'll see tomorrow
