Moonwave – Deep Blue Hybrid System

An interesting blog-post:
Moonwave - Deep Blue Hybrid System - MOONWAVE - Gunboat 60 Catamaran

Especially the 6 kW hydrogeneration-power are impressive!

Re: Moonwave – Deep Blue Hybrid System

This is very good looking setup. I am sure it was not cheap. It sure seems to perform quite well.

Does anyone know if Deep Blue have any plans for a smaller more affordable option for say a 40ft cat.

We have a 2020 Leopard 40 that comes out of contact to Moorings in 5 years time. I would love to take her and go cruising, but the 360L fuel bothers me. I will honestly say I am not a true sailor. Sailing for me is purely a means to get to the far away deserted places I love. My Admiral hates rough sea, so passages need to be short, fast and comfy, so very well timed! If I could afford the fuel and the boat, a powercat would be my first choice.

So if a hybrid system could speed up my vessel and extend the range of my 360L, it would be worth looking at. After all, we will probably replace the motors and sails and a few other bits and bobs before we go cruising.

Re: Moonwave – Deep Blue Hybrid System

Hmmm. Spectacular boat, indeed, but not for anyone whose vocabulary includes "budget."

You're concerned for fuel cost, time between destinations, and hybrid drive. Don't forget the basic physics of a water generator - the impellers will retard the boat while sailing more than the accumulated battery charge there from will propel the boat under power. So, you'll be slowed down while sailing between destinations and not not get it all back under the electric drive. If that were not true you would have invented a perpetual motion machine. On the other hand, solar doesn't have that problem, since the energy stream from the sun is there for the taking. Maybe think about that sort of hybrid power.
