Unhappy My 2-Stroke Nissan Outboard has stopped "peeing"...

My 2-stroke Nissan outboard has stopped "peeing" and now overheats. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

Re: My 2-Stroke Nissan Outboard has stopped "peeing"...

The most likely problem is the water impeller. These take a "set" over time and don't pump as well or at all. Sometimes by running for a few minutes until it begins to overheat, stop, let it cool and try again they will start pumping again.

But in most cases, just replace it. On my Evinrude it was a bear. Easy to disassemble, just a couple of screws on the propeller housing and gears. But to reassemble you had to align three tubes simultaneously: gear shift rod, drive shaft and raw water tube. All had to align perfectly and it took me at least an hour of fiddling to get it all in place.

This is one chore I would gladly leave to the pros, at least on this Evinrude. Hopefully yours is easier.

Yep, Gord is correct, this is exactly what we had to do with our Nissan with the same problem. Hope you didn't run it very long overheated. Chuck

Maybe it's bladder is empty...LMAO no but seriously nissans are known for crusting up in the head if impeller doesn't correct it you need to break er down..

Re: My 2-Stroke Nissan Outboard has stopped "peeing"...

I had this problem with my Johnson 4hp two stroke. I turned it upside down and jet streamed my hose into the hole where the water is supposed to come out (make certain you get the right hole) and then ran it for awhile and it started working just fine. Others have used weedwhacker string to clear out any debris that might have worked its way into the water exit hole after the impeller. We have wasps over here that like to build homes in such places so it is not unusual to have them make a mud nest in the water exit hole or in the intake.
Good luck and I hope its a simple fix.
kind regards,

I have the same engine and some 10 years ago had the same problem. I was unable to get water flowing again and took it to a repair shop thinking it was the impeller. It turned out to be just a clogged water line which was freed up with a air hose. Cost me $50 if I remember right.

Re: My 2-Stroke Nissan Outboard has stopped "peeing"...

Thanks all for your suggestions. I believe my problem had a simple fix.

I connected a water hose along with a hose adapter to the "cooling water check port". I then turned the water on and cranked up the motor as suggested by my pdf manual.

The initial discharged water had a chalky color to it leading me to believe that something inside the outboard had been encrusted with salt. The water later ran clear after four or so minutes.

By the way... I didn't need no manual to tell me to keep the motor in neutral while flushing the thing. Even I is purty smartz sometimes.

My motor now pees once again.

What's a manual?
