Name That Gearbox...

I just picked up a Westerbeke W30, aka 4-91, which matches my boat's engine. It has a different gearbox than my Hurth. I am interested in send it off to a new home to defray my purchase price. I cannot seem to match it to what I see on limited old websites. Can anyone tell me what Make/model it is? Thanks.

My guess: BW Velvet drive 1:1 (no reduction tailhousing)

I go with the BW guess above (Borg-Warner). If it is a BW - that is a damn tough box. treat it right and it won't let you down.

I think you are right, Velvet Drive (left picture) seems to match what I have. I looked for the ID plate above the left mount, but it is missing.

Paragon PL has a housing on the top of the case.

Re: Name That Gearbox...

Seems kind of overkill for the little Westerbeke 4-91 it was on. Hopefully I can find it a new home.

Re: Name That Gearbox...

It might be overkill in that it is rated for much higher horsepower than your engine. I would use it since they just don't seem to crash. Sometimes the damper plates need replacing but the transmission if cared for properly is a keeper.

I don't think you'll find it hard to find a new home for it.

Re: Name That Gearbox...

they work great with 4-108 and other perkins/westerbeke engines.
is better to have overkill than not enough, and the bw grants flexibility when you decide your wimpy lil engine is too small... saves dinero on upgrading powerplant.
might wanna consider that aspect before ditching something that pricey.
