Need some drive line parts ASAP

Our planned 3 week holiday sailing trip turned into a tear the boat apart back at the slip and then try and find parts during the holidays nightmare....

The damper plate on my Hurth HBW 150V (aka ZF 15MIV) decided to toss out springs and parts on the first day of our trip. After taking apart most of the galley to get the V drive tranny out, and break a few bolts off in the process, it seems prudent to do a rebuild on it while it's out because I never want to do this again.:hothead

What I've been searching for is a master repair kit and a new damper plate. What I'm finding is that many places are closed for the holidays, won't ship to the USVI, or don't have the parts in stock.

The damper plate seems especially evasive. It has a 6.25 inch outer diameter and 6 holes for bolts that attach it to the flywheel. There seems to be numerous 5 and 8 hole ones. I suppose I could use this old one as a guide and drill holes as needed to fit but I'd rather just put in the correct one if possible.

The tach sensor was a mangled mess, I've gotten a new one to replace it and I've acquired a rear main seal for the engine too. Is there anything else I should be doing since this is all apart?

I'd be grateful if anyone could point me towards a company that is open and willing to ship the needed parts expeditiously to me. I'd really like to salvage some of our vacation but that's not looking very good at the moment.

Thanks for your time.

The damper plate is an engine part, no? Not a Hurth part. Are you asking the wrong dealers?

Both entities seem to indicate they sell them. But as stated with the holidays, nobody seems to be open or have them or can get them to me in under a few weeks.

If you can find a clutch shop they can probably rebuild your damper plate. The only one that I've used is in California, Kennedy Engineered Products. They can build anything. There must be something similar in Florida.

That plate must be almost perfectly centered and well balanced. You can't do that with a hand drill. You'd have to do in on a mill.

The damper plate is actually broken into many parts. I do appreciate the idea though.

As tight as the damper plate fits into the flywheel there really isn't anyway to get it installed without it being centered. I would think drilling six equally spaced holes around the edge wouldn't change the balance but I'd hate to be wrong!

No, you're probably right. If there's a little nub in the center of the plate it will center it as well as it did on the old one. Drilling new holes that close to the middle probably won't affect the balance enough to matter. Get them as perfect as you can.

And chamfer them so it will sit flat.

Re: Need some drive line parts ASAP

Actually the flywheel is milled out about an 1/8" deep to the diameter (6-1/4") of the entire plate that fits on it's surface. After removing the bolts I had to tap it to get it out.

I'm still holding out hope to find the correct part so I don't have to play "shade-tree machinist".

Thanks for the tip Blue Stocking. Unfortunately they don't have the damper or the rebuild kit and their supplies are closed until next week.
