Need to remove diesle--12v pump recommendations

I have algae and rust (?) in the bottom of my diesel tank.

The algae clogged my siphon bulb.

I'm going to re-purpose the diesel; I don't want to take the risk of polishing it and then messing up my engine.

Any suggestions for a 12v pump. I need to move about 25 gallons.

Re: Need to remove diesle--12v pump recommendations

When I pulled my diesel engine during my conversion to electric propulsion in 2008. I used a Topsider vacuum extractor https://amzn.to/45MYPKQ to remove about thirty gallons of fuel from the obsolete fuel tank. Was quick work as I just hooked the Topsider hose to the fuel tank pickup:

Clogging a priming bulb? That's REALLY dirty!

Simply sucking out the fuel will not leave the tank clean. You have to be sure that you get the walls and bottom of the tank clean and dry before you refill it. If you do not have an access panel to the inside of the tank, and do not want to add one, you will probably be better having a professional service polish the tank contents if they are available in your area. The equipment they have circulates the fuel fast enough and under enough pressure that it will stir up all the gunk.

Your last step is to make sure tha you keep all water out of that tank. That's where your problem starts.

Nice boat! if she’s still sitting on land as in your photo, put a hose through a seacock then into your tank and siphon the fuel into containers placed on the ground below that thru hull. Use a large diameter hose, but not bigger than ¾”. Since the fuel is going to be repurposed, shove a garden hose into the siphon hose from ground level and fill the empty hose with water then pull out the water hose and allow the now siphoning water and fuel to fill the jugs, if water is evident in the bottom of the first of the jugs, you can separate it out quite easily.

I have used one of these (or very similar) with a large industrial water separator/30 micron filter on the suction side to filter/polish my fuel, works very well.

If you haven't already purchased a 12V pump, I've been very satisfied with this one (except that it pumps EXTREMELY fast!)

I bought my pump several years ago, and (if I remember correctly) the fittings are 1" NOT 0.75". So if you choose this pump ask Duda Diesel to open the box and check the fitting size - because their web site still says 0.75".

Disposing of severely contaminated fuel is better (for your engine) than trying to clean it up, but considering you have experienced this issue, installing a polishing system will be beneficial in preventing future problems.

Arguably, the best small capacity fuel pumps are made by Walbro, but if you only have to move 25 gallons, any cheap eBay fuel pump suitable for diesel fuel will do the job.

I used this one to empty about 15 gallons.

I have one of these as a portable power source. Comes in handy when testing circuits as well.
