Some say they are not needed. But IMHO, if the engineer who designed it made provisions for them, they are needed.

Have it on the list to pull the zinc but didn't last night. I imagine it's in need of changing so will do it this weekend.

FWIW --The odds are the zinc will break when you remove it. Meticulously remove the pieces from the heat exchanger or the pieces will accumulate in the fitting that connects the heat exchanger to the mixing elbow. The accumulation of zinc particles will impede raw water flow causing an unexplained rise in engine temperature.

Not mentioning any names BUT some knucklehead thought the pieces would pass through and out the exhaust.
