No Drive and Sounds Like a Bag of Bolts

Hi, i have just purchased a boat and the second time i took it out, while going from ahead to astern i lost drive and it now sounds like there is a bag of bolts grinding about, further messing about reveals that occassionally i can get forward drive and it seems quiet, but as soon as i go astern i lose drive and also the noise comes back and i also lose forward drive again, the engine sounds fine and has only got 100 hours although it is 5 years old. It is a beta 20 with a shaft not sail drive, Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be and maybe how to rectify it.

Disconnect your linkage to the transmission, and shift manually while tied to the dock. Maybe the linkage is out of adjustment?........i2f

If not the linkage than the damper plate. I replace mine and ended up writing an article in Good Old Boat. either pull the issue or email me and I'll assist. Bob Tigar bjtigar1@netzero.net

Sounds more like the transmission, but check the above mentioned items first.

Check the coupling and bolts from the shaft to the trans. Putting it in forward might be pushing the shaft forward and somewhat engauging the gear. The Beta had several gear options which one do you have? If the TMC it is hard to kill. Have someone put the trans in gear while you watch and listen.
