not your fathers 4 107 / 108

Just wondering if anyone has fitted one of these from Foleys, our 4 108 is getting a bit long in the tooth and we are exploring options.
Cheers

Not sure what you're considering, but if it's anything from Foleys forget it! Their customer service has gone to the dogs and many folks have had a really bad experience trying to do business with them.

If you've got a Valiant 40, why not consider a high quality more modern diesel like a Beta? These are marinized Kubota diesels, come in several sizes, and are very robust. http://www.betamarinenc.com/

Also, you can probably find a rebuilt 4-108 in great condition if you want to stick with what you've got. I love the 4-108s...mine is almost 30 years old and going strong.

Not sure where you're located, but there may be a Perkins dealer who does rebuilds somewhere nearby.

The Perkins facility in Singapore may be able to advise you. Perkins Diesel Engines & Powerpart Parts: Virtual Press Office › Facility Locations

What are the mods that concern you? Beta US is pretty good about setting up things like motor mounts to fit existing engine beds when possible. They told me they could supply adapter to fit my existing transmission as well.

Hi skip and thanks.Beta have done quite a few valiant fits so they have it well sussed but as you know there is always going to be issues I find getting simple things done here is a challenge. I just thought straight in and out would suit me better but a new efficient engine is seductive

Re: not your fathers 4 107 / 108

I have a 4108 that is an early 70's on a generator. In time I'll rebuild it. The actual cost in parts is about $7-800 usd including all new valves. If you've kept up with the oil, the bearings are probably standard and the bores get new sleeves and pistons. The 4108 engines are everywhere, boats, tractors stationary engines. Especially countries from the Empire.

All sorts of benefits to going new. A friend installed Beta in his Westsail 32 and I now lust after one for my boat. Very, no..... extremely quiet and smooth compared to my old Westerbeke (which is really a Perkins 4.154 with red paint) and parts are way cheaper and easily available.
