For what's it's worth:

I have, quite safely and successfully, gas welded gasoline tanks by running auto exhaust through the tank. The exhaust will not support combustion or explosions. Should work just fine on diesel tanks.

Had I had TIG available, yes, I would have used Argon.

That's a super idea! I'd thought of using a pressure bottle of CO2 from a beverage company, but your idea is much better.
