Oil Analysis

How badly to I want oil analysis as part of a prepurchase survey? Is it likely to tell me anything useful. No mechanics seem to do them or if they do, they want $300 to take the sample and send it in for a $30 test.

Where does one get a mail in kit?

thanks,

Kurt

Re: Oil Analysis

I sent my oil to this place Blackstone Labs (https://www.blackstone-labs.com/) - not expensive. I did it at oil change time. I think you can learn a lot from one test, but you really need multiple tests over time (100 hours engine run time) to see trends. You could extract some oil from the dip stick yourself with a simple suction pump and hose.

Re: Oil Analysis

I agree with Jordan.
Blackstone is who I use. 2 week turnaround. They typically have averages for the more popular motors and fo offer opinions on your specific readings. I do it every oil change.

Re: Oil Analysis

Cat S.O.S has a 24-48 hr response and an easy to use “ mail in” kit.
Mostly used by fleet service techs to build up a long term profile across all fluids, one off samples are of limited use because the legacy of contaminants from previous failures and repairs lingers for a darned long time.

And that could be a good thing
