Oil drain plug on a perkins 4.236

I am attempting my first oil change on a perkins 4.236 in a gulfstar 50 I recently bought. The previous owner appears to have installed an oil sump pump that feeds from the bottom of the pan, although it doesn't draw anything when turned on. The dipstick indicates there is plenty of oil in the engine and I am wondering if there is an alternative , manual drain plug? I just can't seem to find it... Help please

There is usually a valve on the sump connection before the drain pump.

Re: Oil drain plug on a perkins 4.236

I've got an oil pump on my GS50aux, 4-236. This pump has a reversing switch. Are you pumping out of the pan or into the pan?

The pump works well for me. Don't give up on it.

Oh as a suspenders and belt kind of guy I leave the pump in the off position and the pump breaker off (as well as a cap in the pump outlet)....

I would hate for the pump to come on and drain the engine of oil unknown to me. Especially when under power.

Regards

Here is what my pump looks like

By the way, which Gulfstar did you buy? (hull number and name). Always interested in other GS50.

In my 4236 i have a manual oil pump in the stb side of the engine , dont know if is the same as your engine, need few strokes to feed the pump, in any case drain by the oil drain plug is not a option unless you have plenty of clearance under the engine , the plug in my engine is located in the lower part of the oil pan facing the transmision ... Fix that pump, lot of oil in the 4236 ....

I would suggest you be sure the pump is pulling and not pushing. These pumps also have impellers that can go bad. That would be my second check. Chuck

Re: Oil drain plug on a perkins 4.236

About to delve into this oil change myself. My 4 236 has an oil sump plug on the port side, aft corner of the oil pan.

It also has a 'sump' fitting on the starboard side, about opposite the plug.

Looking around different forums it appears that the sump fitting works quite well at getting ALL the oil out, better than a dipstick sucker does. (cleaner too) I just have to figure out the Jabsco hand pump that was left for the job. There don't seem to be any fittings, or connections. I'll have to jury rug some.

PICs next week when i accomplish the task.

2 gallons of 15-30 oil at a minimum, new filter sideways, just to keep a mess flowing......

Take a look here as it has some good pictures of the oil sump pump (Manual types) on the 4.236
