Panther Outboard Mounts

Just purchased a new Panther 55-4016 to use on my 28 ft sailboat. I need the 16 in travel to make my 9.9 Yamaha high thrust extra long shaft to work like it should. (It weighs 45kg). Even using 75 kg I can’t get the bracket to go down, I have even sat on it and it won’t budge. I have loosened every bolt and still no movement. Please advise.

Wow, that is one of the more useless spec sheets I've run across... There is a maximum weight listed but not a minimum weight. The picture shows an adjustable up/down lock with what looks like a locking screw handle (I assume one on each side). I assume that you unlocked it before trying to lower it?

For sure it’s unlocked. (Maybe not working). Can anyone suggest what is the minimum weight required to push this down. Surely it should work with a 175 lb. weight.
Can the spring be changed out? I’m desperate to get this working.

Had one like that for many years, with a Yamaha 9.9 High-Thrust.

Only trouble getting it to go up and down was accumulated salt/corrosion making it bind a bit.

Did you loosen the knobs on either side, and pull the handle toward you?

Looks as if I can use it with the 9.9HT XLS. Will carry on with the install. Can anybody advise as to maximum depth below water I should install the cavitation plate? It’s much different for a sailboat than a power boat. I’m definitely not going to use the measurement method as given in the manual.

Pretty much as low as you can get it.

The problem is always the engine coming out of the water.

Hopefully you have a 25" shaft.

I'm on my second Panther bracket. This over a 12 year period.

First thing I did with the second one is to remove the hand knobs before they came off and replaced with teflon nuts.

I was moving around some tankers in the first video.

The second is on a nice day.

In the third video, I had been motoring home in a calm then a cloud line came over and brought wind and waves so I unfurled the jib but left the motor in and running.

Re: Panther Outboard Mounts

Thanks for the tips. My bracket has a 16 inch lift so hoping to get as low as possible.
Had to build a block for my reverse transom in order to get the mount vertical. All done. Now have to get some aluminum backing plates for inside and outside the transom.

I didn't use any backing plate since my stern is so thick.

What type boat is it?

Re: Panther Outboard Mounts

It’s an Edel 820 aft cabin. 1981, removed the inside OMC saildrive and replaced with the 9.9 HT.
Now in the process of moving the old bracket (too light) from starboard side to the center with the Panther 0416.
