Re: Paragon SAOV Transmission Rebuild or Replace?

Hi Devil glad it's going back together for you! The set screws for the cross shaft are probably lying in the bottom of the case! They do like to lossen off on occason and this can cause the shaft to slide and push open the seals. Something to keep an eye on! My manual calls for Trasmission fluid instead of 30 wt. Motor Oil You might want to check yours. Though the same transmission in an Atomic 4 uses 30 wt.

Re: Paragon SAOV Transmission Rebuild or Replace?

Yes my old one was stamped ATF on the V-drive and the transmission, but the previous owner used ATF in the drive and SAe 30 in the transmission.

The one I put in was stamped the same but the v-drive has 30w as well as the transmission! Very confusing. My diesel Mechanic said the same about the atomic 4 situation and said to stick with 30w. But in the v-drive too??

I'm concerned about all the variances in oils here. Why would I not use what was recommended by the MFG?

Any advice on aligning the shafts on the v-drive? We have about a 1/16" gap. Do I need shims or??

No worries. Got it. Lettings rest over night can be a good problem solver! Noticed this morning the key was stick out a bit so we managed to get it back in and it looks like we'll be all set.

Re: Paragon SAOV Transmission Rebuild or Replace?

Just for information here, there are shops that will reline any sort of friction band, plate, shoe, etc. There is no need to pay 800$ for a reverse band if the metal is still good. These companies will reline for wet (oil bath) application or dry. They do a lot of odd ball stuff for antique restorers so a simple transmission band should be no problem. The one that I have used was called Friction Industry in Sacramento Calif., but I am sure any large industrial area will have similar shops. The antique brake bands that I had relined were done at a reasonable price. Check around before you pay the big bucks. I hope this can save someone some money. _____Grant.
